Born in Guyana, South America, Dr. Edwards earned a BA in English at the University of Guyana. He continued his education in England, earning an MA in Linguistics in English Language Teaching at University of Lancaster, England, and his Ph.D. in Language and Linguistics at University of York, England. At Wayne State University Dr. Edwards teaches several courses in linguistics. His research interests and publications include Guyanese Creole studies, African American Vernacular English, the sociolinguistics of rap lyrics and language and culture. Dr. Edwards was formerly Director of the Linguistics program, Assistant and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Assistant Vice President, Academic Affairs, interim chair of the English Department at WSU. As the Humanities Center Director, Dr. Edwards manages all aspects of the Center's work and chairs the Advisory Board.

Grant Writer and Development Specialist
Cheryl joined the Humanities Center as a Grant Writer and Development Specialist in February 2017. At the Humanities Center, Cheryl's role is to develop and cultivate relationships and support with foundations, organizations, and individuals who support the Center's mission to nurture interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and intradisciplinary work in the humanities and arts at Wayne State University. Cheryl is developing funding strategies for new and existing projects at the Humanities Center, writing grants and preparing reports to funding sources. She is developing external alliances by fostering individual, organizational, and philanthropic support with passionate citizens, non-profit organizations/foundations, governmental bodies, and corporations. A Detroit-area native, Cheryl earned her BA in Psychology at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. She continued her education at Central Michigan University, earning an MA in Clinical Psychology. She is an experienced grant writer and reviewer and has published manuscripts in the areas of clinician training, health screening with linkage to care, narrative medicine, and end-of-life healthcare. She is currently a part-time PhD student in Communication at Wayne State University, with interests in social innovation, communication, and philanthropy.
